变压器闭合的油路系统中通过油的浮力、重力的变化而对流循环流动。即在变压器油箱内部，被变压器油所包围的发热元件（例如绕组与铁心等）加热了周围的变压器油，受热的变压器油密度变小而形成浮力向上浮动，下部温度较低的油随之取代了上浮的油，使变压器油在变压器绕组及铁心等发热元件中自下而上的流动。如果不能及时散热，设备过热就会造成损坏，影响变压器的正常运行。油冷机能够持续稳定地把油温保持在一定范围内。有效地解决了变压器及时散热，以免设备过热而造成绝缘损坏，影响设备正常使用。
按照冷却或者散热的方式的不同来划分，可以分为水冷形式的和自然风冷形式的、带压缩机冷油机的。水冷形式的冷油机指的是冷凝器是依靠外加的冷却塔来进行散热的。而风冷形式的冷油机则是依靠机器自身所带的风扇来进行散热的。带压缩机冷油机是一款工业冷油机比较直接的冷却方式，通过压缩机制冷循环油降温效率高冷却稳定。
风冷式油冷机介绍
QX-AO系列冷油机主要由压缩机、冷凝器、热力膨胀阀（毛细管）和蒸发器四大部件组成，采用单蒸气压缩制冷系统，利用制冷剂的气液相互转换，吸收和释放热量的原理，达到制冷的效果。
QX-AO系列开机后：
（1）压缩机开始工作，制冷剂在压缩机的压缩作用下变成高压高温气体，往排气侧的方向循环；在循环过程，高压高温的制冷剂气体通过冷凝器
（2）与空气发生热交换，由气态转变为液态，同时被空气带走热量；冷媒冷却过程，液态的高压冷剂通过热力膨胀阀（或毛细管节流）
（3）压力下降，部分制冷剂由液态装变为气态，此时制冷剂为液态和气态两相混合的状态；冷媒节流过程中，制冷剂通过蒸发器
（4）在蒸发器内与冷冻油发生热交换，冷却冷冻油到所需的温度，满足设定要求；经蒸发器后的气体制冷剂循环回到压缩机，完成一次制冷循环。
