通常我们把气体在液体中的存在现象称作气泡。气泡的形成现象，在自然界中的许多过程中都能遇到，当气体在液体中受到剪切力的作用时就会形成大小、形状各不相同的气泡。目，对气泡的分类与定义并不是十分严格，按照从大到小的顺序可分为厘米气泡（CMB）、毫米气泡（MMB）、微米气泡（MB）、微纳米气泡（MNB）、纳米气泡（NB）。所谓的微纳气泡，是指气泡发生时直径在 10 微米左右到数百纳米之间的气泡，这种气泡是介于微米气泡和纳米气泡之间，具有常规气泡所不具备的物理与化学特性。

1 比表面积大
10微米的气泡与1毫米的气泡相比较，在一定体积下者的比表面积理论上是后者的100倍。空气和水的接触面积就增加了100倍，各种反应速度也增加了100倍。
2 上升速度慢
气泡直径1mm的气泡在水中上升的速度为6m/min，而直径10μm的气泡在水中的上升速度为3mm/min，后者是者的1/2000。如果考虑到比表面积的增加，微纳米气泡的溶解能力比一般空气增加20万倍。
3 自身增压溶解
水中的气泡四周存有气液界面，而气液界面的存在使得气泡会受到水的表面张力的作用。对于具有球形界面的气泡，表面张力能压缩气泡内的气体，从而使更多的气泡内的气体溶解到水中。微纳米气泡在水中的溶解是一个气泡逐渐缩小的过程，压力的上升会增加气体的溶解速度，伴随着比表面积的增加，气泡缩小的速度会变的越来越快，从而溶解到水中，理论上气泡即将消失时的所受压力为无限大。
4 表面带电
纯水溶液是由水分子以及少量电离生成的H+和OH-组成，气泡在水中形成的气液界面具有容易接受H+和OH-的特点，而且通常阳离子比阴离子更容易离开气液界面，而使界面常带有负电荷。当微纳米气泡在水中收缩时，电荷离子在非常狭小的气泡界面上得到了快速浓缩富集，表现为电位的显著增加，到气泡破裂在界面处可形成非常高的电位值。
5 产生大量自由基
微气泡破裂瞬间，由于气液界面消失的剧烈变化，界面上集聚的高浓度离子将积蓄的化学能一下子释放出来，此时可激发产生大量的羟基自由基。羟基自由基具有超高的氧化还原电位，其超强氧化分解能量高于氯、紫外线、臭氧等氧化剂，可降解水中正常条件下难以氧化分解的污染物如有机磷、胺氮等，实现对水质的净化作用。
6 气体溶解率高
微纳米气泡具有上升速度慢、自身增压溶解的特点，使得微纳米气泡在缓慢的上升过程中逐步缩小成纳米，然后消减湮灭溶入水中，从而能够大大提高气体（空气、氧气、臭氧、等）在水中的溶解度。对于普通气泡，气体的溶解度往往受环境压力的影响和限制存在饱和溶解度。在标准环境下，气体的溶解度很难达到饱和溶解度以上。而微纳米气泡由于其内部的压力高于环境压力，使得以大气压为假定条件计算的气体过饱和溶解条件得以打破。
